Every child with CVI deserves to be identified
and supported

Cerebral Visual Impairment / Cortical Visual Impairment (CVI)

Through evidence-based screening, education, and empowerment, we are making this possible.

The Austin McDowell Foundation

We believe every child with cerebral visual impairment (CVI) can thrive when they're identified early and supported effectively. Through our three pillars of work - Screen, Learn, and Empower - we're creating pathways for children, families, and professionals to access the tools and knowledge they need.

CVI is the most common cause of visual impairment in children in developed countries, yet too many

children go unidentified. We want to change that.

BUILT ON RESEARCH AND LIVED EXPERIENCE

Dr Nicola McDowell

The Austin McDowell Foundation was established by Dr Nicola McDowell, a Senior Lecturer at Massey University specialising in CVI research and education. Nicola also has CVI herself.

When Nicola was 16, she suffered a massive brain haemorrhage. She survived, but her vision - and her life - changed forever. It took 17 years to receive her CVI diagnosis. Those 17 years of searching for answers, of knowing something was different but not understanding what, drive everything we do today.

As both a researcher and someone with lived experience of CVI, Nicola understands what children and families need: accessible screening, evidence-based education, and the power to advocate for themselves.

The Austin McDowell Foundation exists so no child has to wait 17 years for answers.

How we're creating change

We approach our mission through three interconnected pillars, each designed to make identification, understanding, and advocacy accessible to everyone.

SCREEN

LEARN

EMPOWER

Screening is the first step in identifying children with CVI.

The Austin Assessment is a validated, accessible screening tool that identifies children who may have CVI-related visual perceptual difficulties. Available for families and professionals, it's one tool among others that can help ensure children get the support they need.

Through a fun, engaging card-matching game, children, parents, and professionals can better understand how vision works - and when it might not be working typically.

Knowledge is power. We offer webinars and presentations to help everyone understand CVI and how to support children effectively.

Our webinars cover topics from identifying CVI in mainstream schools to practical strategies for supporting children's learning. Whether you're an individual or a parent newly navigating a CVI diagnosis or a professional seeking deeper understanding, we're here to connect you with the knowledge you need.

We're also proud partners with CVI Scotland, who provide comprehensive, evidence-based resources about CVI.

We believe change happens when individuals have the knowledge and confidence to advocate for themselves and the children in their lives.

From understanding how knowledge empowers parents to become effective advocates, to learning from Dr Nicola McDowell's personal CVI journey through her blog series and social media, to connecting with others navigating similar experiences; our aim is for these resources to help empower others - and to build this pillar together with the CVI community.

"I always felt dumb. So it was a big relief to find out that I have CVI and that I am not just not smart. It made me a lot happier"
